IED Clearance Good Practice Guide

3.3.7.VISUAL SEARCH WITH AN AID – INTRUSIVE SEARCH Experience has shown that objects such as furniture and household appliances or cavities in construction within buildings and structures can easily hide emplaced EO or explosive components and often limit a manual search visually and physically. If a threat analysis recognises the potential for this situation and for a more efficient search to minimise damage to property, then simple hand tools that facilitate access to the inside of these objects or cavities, and widely available optical aids (see Image 16), should be used to efficiently search inside these objects.
