IED Clearance Good Practice Guide

4.6.7. FILLING AND PLACEMENT

When filling and placing a shaped charge the following points should be observed to aid in achieving a successful result: • No air voids in the explosive fill. The loading process should be conducted by adding small amounts of explosives at a time and tamping with a non-metallic mandrel; • Intimate contact between liner and explosive filling; • Initiate from the rear; • Use appropriate stand-off. Both the JFC and EFP need space to form in free air; • Place at 90 degrees to the centre line of the target; • Do not aim at boosters and detonators when trying to deflagrate; • Aim at boosters and internal detonators when trying to achieve a high order detonation.
