PRINCIPLE 4 Safe separation between individual searchers and search teams should be applied to minimise casualties in the event of an unintended detonation.
This is appropriate to all environments. It can be particularly challenging in large multi- floored buildings where it is not practical to be cleared by just one person.
Consideration should also be given to structural failure occurring in the event of an un-planned explosion and how to minimise the severity of such an event on individuals and teams.

PRINCIPLE 5 Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) commensurate with the threat assessment should be worn.
PPE reduces the consequences (or impacts) of an accident when one occurs and therefore should be seen as a final form of mitigation and is not a replacement for good procedures. IMAS 10.20 Demining worksite safety and IMAS 10.30 Personal Protective Equipment - PPE should be followed and both explosive and non-explosive hazards considered. How PPE integrates with equipment, human factors and the environment are all issues that should be taken into account.
