AGEING OF EXPLOSIVE ORDNANCE (EO)
ADAPTATIONS Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related travel restrictions, limited engagement of partners and the lack of accountability, expansion of the research on the ageing of explosive ordnance in the SEA region did not materialise.
analysed the power sources and initiation mechanisms of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) found in Colombia. During the research, several battery-powered devices were examined, and a basic mapping of how they function was developed. The ageing of common batteries was tested under a variety of conditions and conclusions were drawn in terms of the longevity of battery powered IEDs. This was then compared with the mechanical initiation mechanism found in a common type of IED found in Colombia.
The ageing of explosive ordnance (EO) is a recurring yet unaddressed topic in mine action. The lack of holistic knowledge creates obstacles in fully appreciating the effects of ageing on EO, including that of IEDs and submunitions. Under the GICHD’s initiative, pilot studies were conducted in Colombia to gather evidence on how the passage of time and environmental factors increase the vulnerability of devices. In 2020, the GICHD finalised its research in collaboration with Tecnologías Marte and EAFIT University (Medellin, Colombia). The research
