FIELD SUPPORT
National standards are developed, adopted and implemented by states, according to international standards IMMEDIATE OUTCOME 2
URBAN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
ADAPTATIONS COVID-19 travel restrictions impacted the development of guidance around the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in mine action. However, to mitigate the pandemic’s impact, the GICHD adapted its plan to draw support from Lebanon (LMAC) and the GICHD’s explosive ordnance risk education (EORE) team who used their recent work on the risk-taking behaviour of returnees to inform the development of potential solutions for the latter. This adaptation led to an acceleration of work with the package of EORE measures and materials expected to be completed in 2021.
Immediate Outcome 9, Relevant Concepts, Methods and Tools are Captured in International Standards. The guide also aims to benefit mine action operators with training and quality management skills. UNDP Yemen had cited a significant reduction in the number of accidents occurring during IED-related operations, as a result of this new guidance. An annex to the guide on safety distances in urban settings was completed in 2020 and will be published in 2021. Drawing support from the GICHD’s gender and diversity, as well as explosive ordnance risk education division, this project embarked on research around community engagement and urban populations that will move forward in 2021.
Those involved in humanitarian efforts are often not aware of the most recent information and technical developments relating to explosive ordnance contamination in urban environments, including IEDs. Filling these gaps can be achieved through the review of current practices and technologies, trials of new equipment and the development of new approaches. With this in mind, in 2020 the GICHD published the IED Clearance Good Practice Guide. This guide aims to assist NMAAs with translating content from IMAS 07.14, IMAS 09.13 and IMAS 09.31 into their NMAS and translating IMAS-level guidance into procedural task-level examples, extending its outcome contribution to the GICHD’s
