COOPERATION, RESEARCH, STUDIES AND ASSESSMENTS
ADAPTATIONS The unforeseen COVID-19 pandemic impacted the delivery of this project’s activities, particularly around in-person training delivery. In an effort to mitigate this impact, the GICHD focused on developing training tools to facilitate online or hybrid delivery of its activities, including those postponed to 2021.
The application of the land release approach and the update of methodologies contribute to increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of mine action operations. This resulted in the following activities being carried out in 2020: the GICHD completed a land release case study on Afghanistan; proposed technical survey methodologies and support to three new NMAS in Bosnia and Herzegovina; delivered an in-person operations analyst training course for Colombia; and conducted an in-person assessment for Serbia (SMAC) that identified areas for improvement.
Working towards increasing knowledge globally, the GICHD translated the chapter of the IED Clearance Good Practice Guide on ‘Ground Sign Awareness’ into Arabic, Dari, Spanish, French, and Russian and its gender and diversity e-learning course into Ukrainian. Adapting to online methodologies, an operational efficiency workshop was also conducted for Ukraine in December 2020. An article on the GICHD’s multi-year efforts in implementing NTS training activities in Colombia was published in the Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction.
