Relevant concepts, methods and tools are captured in international standards
For 20 years, the International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) have laid the foundation for safe, efficient, and high-quality mine action operations. Through its key roles, the GICHD ensures they are fit for purpose to meet the evolving needs of governments and organisations working to support those living with the risk posed by EO. ACHIEVEMENTS In 2022, the GICHD continued to serve as a member of the IMAS Review Board (RB) and the IMAS Steering Group. It also housed the Secretariat for both, thereby contributing to the smooth functioning of the IMAS governance structure. At the technical level, the GICHD contributed to creating and revising IMAS documentation either by chairing and or providing expertise to technical working groups. During the year, 12 IMAS documents were considered and approved by the RB, ensuring the IMAS remained fit for purpose to support safe, efficient, and effective mine action programmes. The GICHD coordinated 11 of the technical working groups that worked to review and write the documents.
The Centre also worked to promote the IMAS through outreach and training. It marked the 20 th anniversary of the IMAS framework, highlighting its achievements through a digital campaign. It successfully launched an e-learning course entitled ‘Understanding the International Mine Action Standards’ that had been completed by 890 people by the end of the year. The 86 th Partnership for Peace training course on the IMAS and conformance took place in Switzerland, in 2022. To reach a wider audience and improve accessibility, the GICHD started translating the IMAS e-learning into Arabic and French. These translations will help improve understanding of fundamental tenets of the IMAS framework, such as its terminology, principles, governance structure and scope of application.

T Before taking the lead of a technical working group, organisations should have a clear plan for the revision process and be committed to hard, substantive work. T Collaboration is essential and significant effort is required to maintain trust between actors with opposing views and ensure their engagement.
